“Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.” – 1 Peter 4:8 NIV
Is it possible that love can help you forget your spouse’s betrayal? Well, not exactly. The word used here is “cover”, which is better translated “to veil”. A veil is used to conceal; you know what is there but you can’t see it clearly. I don’t think God expects us to ever completely forget a betrayal as deep as infidelity. The effects cannot be minimized but the pain and suffering can be healed.
The love that is being described here is “agapē” love, which is different from the love for a friend or erotic/sexual love. Agapē love is God’s kind of love, expressly found in and through Him. It is a distinct attribute of God but made available to Christians through the indwelling of His Spirit.
God’s Kind of Love
The list of qualities of God’s kind of love are daunting. It is patient… suffers long… not self-seeking… keeps no record of wrongs (See 1 Cor 13:4-6 for a complete list of love’s qualities). These may seem impossible to extend to your spouse in light of an affair, and they are, apart from God. A miraculous thing happens when we seek to love our spouse with God’s kind of love- their sins and shortcomings become less visible and apparent to us. It’s no longer what defines them and no longer what we see in them. Did you know that through God’s love, you have the power to help your spouse overcome being defined by their betrayal? Yes, you can help them heal simply by loving them with God’s kind of love.
The importance of love cannot be overstated. Even among faith, hope and love, love is the greatest grace God grants us as believers (1 Cor 13:13). One day, we will no longer have need for faith and hope when we are with God in heaven. Yet, love will always remain because God is love (1 John 4:8, 16). Ask God to empower you with His love and show you how to find this love for your spouse.
My Prayer for You
“I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. 17 Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. 18 And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. 19 May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.” Eph 3:16-19 NLT
